Leave the field better than you found it.
As your coach, one of the most important lessons I want to share with you is about leaving the field better than you found it. This idea goes beyond just playing a sport or participating in activities; it’s about how we approach challenges, relationships, and our everyday lives. Sometimes, we face tough moments—maybe we lose a game, don’t get picked for a team, or have a disagreement with a friend. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or upset during these times, but I want you to remember that there’s always a way to turn things around and make a positive impact, both on yourself and those around you.
When you leave the field better than you found it, you’re making a choice to uplift yourself and others, even when things get tough. Think about it like this: if you’re feeling down about a game you lost, instead of focusing on what went wrong, try to focus on what you learned. Did you notice areas where you can improve? Did you see something great your teammate did? Celebrate those moments and share them! By doing this, not only do you improve yourself, but you also help create a supportive atmosphere for your teammates. Your enthusiasm can be contagious, lifting everyone’s spirits.
It's also important to think about the way we treat each other during challenging times. We all have our ups and downs, and sometimes a kind word or compliment can make a huge difference. If a teammate is feeling sad after a loss, take a moment to encourage them. You might say something like, “I saw how hard you tried out there. We’ll get better together!” These small gestures can help create a positive environment where everyone feels valued and supported. Remember, you have the power to change someone’s day for the better, just by being a good friend.
Here are a few simple ways to leave the field better than you found it:
- Show Appreciation: Thank your teammates for their effort, whether you win or lose. A simple “great job!” can boost someone’s confidence.
- Be a Good Listener: If someone is upset, lend an ear and let them share their feelings. Sometimes, just being there for someone can help them feel better.
- Practice Positivity: Focus on the positives, even in tough situations. Sometimes, the lessons we learn after a loss are more valuable than the win itself.
- Help Out: Offer to help a teammate improve their skills. You’ll not only strengthen your bond but also learn more yourself in the process.
Leaving the field better than you found it also means taking care of your surroundings. Whether it’s picking up trash after practice, returning equipment to its proper place, or simply showing respect to the facilities we use, these actions reflect your character. They show that you care not just about your own experience but about the community as a whole. When we all contribute in small ways, we create a welcoming and safe environment for everyone.
Lastly, understand that it’s okay to feel disappointed or upset when things don’t go as planned. These feelings are a part of life, and it’s important to acknowledge them. However, what matters most is how you respond. You have a choice: you can let those feelings weigh you down, or you can use them as fuel to grow stronger and more resilient. Embrace the challenge, learn from it, and remember that every setback is an opportunity to leave the field—and yourself—better than you found it.
So, as we continue to practice and play, let’s commit to this idea together. Let’s lift each other up, support one another, and create a space where everyone can thrive. Together, we can make our time on the field more enjoyable and fulfilling for everyone!
